An Englishman’s home is his castle, so the saying goes, we can’t put moats and draw bridges in our front garden even though sometimes we feel like it! But we can take basic precautions to keep the burglars out. Just apply these simple and often inexpensive steps to help prevent access to your home.

Look at your home through a burglar’s eyes.

How would you get in if you’d forgot your keys? If you can get in, so can a burglar!

Are there places where they could break in without being seen?

Would they have to make a lot of noise breaking glass?

A third of burglars get in through windows, remember to keep windows locked, remove the keys and keep them out of sight in a safe place. Fit window locks these can easily be seen from the outside and may put some burglars off. Even small windows such as skylights or bathroom fanlights need locks.

A thief can get through any gap that’s bigger than a human head and remember some burglars use small children to climb in and open a door.

Two thirds of burglars gain entry through doors, keep your doors locked even when you’re at home. Use the mortise deadlock or on a PVC or other enhanced security doors, the fully or double-locked mode especially at night.
